A Well-Established Source of Help
Founded in 1957, the Center has a long history of service in central Iowa. It is one of Iowa's finest community mental health centers. The Richmond Center's mission focuses primarily on the central Iowa counties of Story, Boone, and Greene. Its offices are located in Ames, Boone, and Jefferson. Each year over 2,500 people of all ages seek outpatient and community-based services at the Center. In addition, the Richmond Center provides education, prevention, and consultation services in its three-county service area.

Over 60 percent of the people who come to the Richmond Center are referred by professional sources: doctors, nurses, lawyers, ministers, employee assistance programs (EAPs), human service agencies, and educators. Most others learn about the Center from a friend or family member.

Services


Therapy and Counseling
The Center's therapy staff is experienced in treating a broad scope of emotional issues and mental health problems. Therapists help each of their clients assess, understand, and work toward resolution of their problems.

Outpatient Psychiatry
The Center's Psychiatry staff of an Adult Psychiatrist,a Child/Adolescsent Psychiatrist, a Nurse Practitioner and three Registered Nurses conduct mental health assessments, develops treatment plans, and provides medication management services.

Psychological Testing and Evaluation
The Center's licensed psychologists offer a variety of testing and evaluation services for both children and adults. Typically these services involve administration of the test, scoring and interpretation of the test results, and preparation of a written report related to the test.

Outreach Services
Adults with Persistent and Serious Mental Illnesses can access the following in-home and in-community services:

  • Supported Community Living: provides individualized services and supports that enable a mentally ill person to live, work, and recreate in community settings; services relate directly to managing a serious and persistent mental illness while living independently.
  • Home Based Habilitation Services and Day Habilitation Services: available to Medicaid eligible consumers diagnosed with mental illness. This consists of individualized services and supports that assist with the acquisition, retention, or improvement in skills related to living in the community.
  • Community Support Services: are intended to maximize a consumer's psychiatric care. This includes monitoring mental health symptoms and functioning, and developing a crisis plan. This service also assists consumers in attending psychiatric appointments and obtaining medications, Services are provided by Outreach Workers, and take place primarily in the consumer's home.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Services
An EAP is designed by an employer to provide a wellness benefit for employees. It enables employees to obtain professional counseling help for personal or emotional problems. Such programs give employees easy, no-cost access to confidential professional assessment, brief counseling, and referral services. An employer designs its EAP program to fit its respective human resources goals. The Richmond Center has contracts with various companies to provide EAP services. Two of its primary EAP contracts are with institutions based in Ames: Iowa State University and Mary Greeley Medical Center.

Clubhouse
The Clubhouse was created in 1998 as a meeting place for those citizens of Carroll County who have been diagnosed with a persistent mental illness. The Clubhouse provides peer support and socialization for its members in a safe, accepting environment. During the hours the Clubhouse is open, members may drop in at any time in order to use the facilities. Members have access to the Clubhouse's exercise equipment, billiard table, library, stereo, television and video equipment, computer including internet access, kitchen and more. There is no requirement for members of the Clubhouse to be involved in any other services at The Richmond Center.

Crisis Intervention

The Center offers 24-hour crisis intervention services every day of the year. During the Center's business hours, a person in crisis can be assisted by telephone or by coming to the Center. After business hours, a person can utilize the Center's crisis intervention telephone service.

Education and Prevention Services
As a community-based mental health organization, the Center works to increase community awareness about mental health, mental disorders, and available preventative measures and treatments. It also works to reduce the stigma around seeking help for mental health problems. In addition, the Center offers no-cost mental health screening opportunities to the public several times per year.
